Hague ber om ursäkt för "ERM-debacle"
WILLIAM HAGUE yesterday broke with the Conservative past by delivering an unreserved apology to the country for the last Government's "great mistake" of entering the European exchange-rate mechanism.
It was time, he told the Conservative Party conference in Blackpool, to be "brutally candid" about the fateful move in 1990 that led to the mayhem of Black Wednesday and eventually destroyed the credibility of the Tories.
"I'm sorry we did it. We should have the courage and the confidence to say so, " he said.
Almost everyone thought it was a good idea at the time but the party paid the price, he added. "We went into something when the time was not right and we must never let that happen to our country again."
It was another indication of his decision to take a hard line against entry to the single currency, which he confirmed could not be contemplated in the "foreseeable future".
Mr Hague's decision to apologise and "purge our contempt", as one of his aides put it, brought one of the loudest cheers in his rallying address to the conference.

Allvarligt talat, det är anmärkningsvärt, men föga uppmärksammat, att det officiella Sverige fortfarande inte har erkänt att det var ett misstag att knyta kronan till ecun. Det var rätt att låsa kronan, och det var rätt att försvara kronan, även om det misslyckades, är den vanliga uppfattningen, i den mån säger något.
Sanningen, som jag uppfattar den, och jag brukar inte ha helt fel, är knytningen av kronan, och kronförsvaret, beslut fattade i det av alla idag efterstärvade stora samförståndet, var misstag av historiska proportioner.
Det är inte konstigt att de ansvariga försöker komma undan sitt ansvar, men det är konstigt att de ha klarat sig så länge.
